APPLE DONORS

We want to make cider with purpose, a cider that starts and ends with YOU!
With your help we aim to produce our apple cider including apples sourced by you, apples from community orchards, local spaces and back gardens that can help us make what we do truly unique. We believe that by using urban apples as part of our blend it can produce a tangible outcome that communities can support and nurture, helping promote sustainability, fights against food waste and encourages local food buying and sourcing.

So…we want no apple to go to waste. With your help we will continue to increase the % of urban apples in our blend, year after year. We’ll soon be releasing details of our new Apple Donor programme for 2017, so check back soon and find out how you can help us and become a #AppleDonor!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

You give us apples and we’ll give you cider in return. Deal?

WHAT DO I GET IF I DONATE AND IS THERE A MINIMUM AMOUNT?

We’ll never turn a good apple down, but if you want cider in return you’ll need a minimum of 5kg. We weigh your apples when you bring them to us. We call this your ‘dry weight’.

To make it simple and easy, we give you back 10% of your dry weight back in finished cider. For example, 10% of 20KG of apples donated would be 2 litres of finished, bottle and packed cider, ready to take away!

HOW DO I KNOW THE APPLES ARE RIPE?

Most varieties are ready when they come away from the tree with a simple twist of the stalk and one of the best ways to strip your tree is to give it a really good shake on the day you want to pick and bring your fruit to us. If you still aren’t sure, there is some handy advice here.

DO YOU TAKE FALLEN OR BRUISED FRUIT?

We love any apple and a few bruises are fine... but not the rotten ones! If there are some you’re not sure about, please hand them to us separately but as a rule, if you wouldn’t eat it yourself, it probably won’t be right for us.

WILL YOU COLLECT MY APPLES OR CAN I BRING MY APPLES TO YOU?

We would prefer you to bring us your apples when they are ripe and ready. However, if you have collected so many that you are unable to transport them, give us a call and we will see what we can do!

I’VE MADE AN APPLE DONATION SO WHEN WILL MY CIDER BE READY FOR COLLECTION?

You can either exchange it for Urban Orchard cider on the day or wait until usually around March-April the year after, when our juice will have been fully used. Sadly we can’t guarantee your bottles will have your apples in it, but we can promise that a cider lover somewhere will have them!

CAN YOU PRUNE MY TREES FOR ME?

Sorry, we’re too busy making cider! Although if you ask nicely, we may be able to put you in touch with someone…

WHAT IS AN APPLE DONOR STATION?

If you are a community garden, social enterprise, allotment, or any kind of organisation, then you can host your very own Apple Donor Station day, and we will help you raise funds for your own project in return for any apples collected!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

First, you as a group will choose a convenient date for your Apple Donor Station day, then we’ll give you everything you need to stage and promote the event, from flyers and posters to leaflets. We leave it to you to run your own event, and encourage your local community to donate some delicious apples.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

A couple of days later, we’ll arrive to collect and weigh your apples. Now for the best bit. We will pay you for the apples at 20% above market rate using our Fairtrade model, meaning that your community group receives a fundraising donation to use in whatever way you wish. We love being able to give back to the very community who is helping us to grow, and you will one day be able to taste your own apples in our cider!
